African Diary by Bill Bryson

I thought this was a real travelogue on Kenya. It is in fact a collection bowl masquerading as a book. Apparently all the royalties (£9.99 per book) were donated to CARE. It’s very slim and its highlights include a visit to Kibera, Africa’s biggest slum and the ruins of Gedi on the coast. It takes about 20 minutes to read the book (attentively) and smacks of that terrible “Oh gosh, I didn’t know life could be so bad” and “Christ, am I glad I was born with quilted toilet paper stuck in my arsehole” attitude.
